There was a ghost
Named Lafayette
Who haunted ‘Grisle Wood’
And only appeared
When darkness neared
For he was told he could

Now Lafayette
Was mostly kind
When he would appear
But in the bones
Of evil men
He shook out all their fear

For Lafayette
Cared not for men
Who treated women roughly
He died amidst
A damsels aid
and *whistle* was she lovely

The damsel was
A washer girl
Coming from the well
And Lafayette
Saw men of wealth
And heard her start to yell

The wealthy men
Stripped her with swords
While she tried to fight
But Lafayette
disturbed their work
And gave them quite a fright

He fought them all
Two swords in hand
And shoved them down the well
He gave the damsel
His heavy cloak
and healed her with a spell

“But how?” you ask
“How did he die?
No more evil was afoot.”
Well Lafayette
A man so clumsy
Did not see where his foot was put

So he picked up
Our fair maiden
But tripped over a pail
The girl he dropped
His sword got caught
Himself he did impale

When he did find
The washer girl
Upon his specter raising
She told him of
The ‘Grisle Wood’
And the men that needed chastening

So Lafayette
Does haunt the wood
And keep evil men from hunting
The men beware
His ghostly stare,
Unholy wails, and grunting

Rumor says
To see a bear
Inside ‘Grisle Wood’
Is to see Lafayette
Reborn
Ready to fight for good
