Last year it was gingerbread
The men and the houses
I wanted it all
I wanted to be surrounded
By warmth and spice and sugar
And the year before it was pastels
A Christmas theme to help my mind
Come to terms with the sun
The flowers and the short sleeves
Colors that matched the temperature
This year I didn’t think about Christmas
The nostalgia almost killed me
The lights
The early nights
The Pillsbury slice n’ bake cookies
I daydreamed of stockings over a fire
Until it scorched me
Back to my sunburned reality
Of gold and and black sand
And rounded pebbles that sink
Under the weight of my spirit
And my size 9 feet
And on this Christmas
I’ll drink cold sparkling moscato
And make love and eat chocolate
And accept the unexpected
Silence of the night
